Summary

The Moomins, in case you didn't know, are kind, philosophical creatures with velvety fur and smooth round snouts, who live in a tall blue house in a beautiful woodland valley, beside the sea。 They love the sunshine and sleep all through the winter months, waking up when spring arrives。

Except one year when Moomintroll accidentally awakes and finds himself stranded and alone in a mysterious world blanketed with snow。 In Moominland Midwinter we follow Moomin as he overcomes his amazement and isolation and, with the help of the wise Too-ticky and the fearless Little My, begins to explore the glittering new landscape。

Nothing makes me miss my mother more than reading about Moomin Valley。 Tove Jansson's writing has appeal to all age groups and enough insight to allow for many kinds of reading。 The thing that sticks most for me, though, is the loving portrayal of characters that are as simple and complicated as real people。 Nothing makes me miss my mother more than reading about Moomin Valley。 Tove Jansson's writing has appeal to all age groups and enough insight to allow for many kinds of reading。 The thing that sticks most for me, though, is the loving portrayal of characters that are as simple and complicated as real people。 。。。more

A very sweet tale with great prose。 Its themes of loneliness, scrambling to find meaning and company in a desolate, unknown, and hostile world, should resonate greatly with anyone, given the pandemic we've lived through。 Would definitely read all the others。 A very sweet tale with great prose。 Its themes of loneliness, scrambling to find meaning and company in a desolate, unknown, and hostile world, should resonate greatly with anyone, given the pandemic we've lived through。 Would definitely read all the others。 。。。more

4。5 starsThanks to Hilary for introducing me to the Moomins! I don't how I missed these when I was a child or when my children were young。The Moomins are cartoonish little characters with cute little hippo faces and roly-poly bodies that you feel you would like to hug。 I would recommend these chapter books for grades 2 and up。As the book begins, Moomintroll wakes up midwinter and can't go back to sleep (something I can empathize with)。 His house is quiet。 Moominmamma, Moominpappa and Snork Maide 4。5 starsThanks to Hilary for introducing me to the Moomins! I don't how I missed these when I was a child or when my children were young。The Moomins are cartoonish little characters with cute little hippo faces and roly-poly bodies that you feel you would like to hug。 I would recommend these chapter books for grades 2 and up。As the book begins, Moomintroll wakes up midwinter and can't go back to sleep (something I can empathize with)。 His house is quiet。 Moominmamma, Moominpappa and Snork Maiden (his friend) are asleep。 Moomintroll looks out the window to a world covered in snow, something he has never encountered before as Moomins sleep all winter long from November to April。Thus begins Moomintroll's great adventure in the snow which is propelled by his childlike innocence and boundless curiosity。 He meets many different creatures during his adventures, each one teaching him or learning from him。 He learns to broaden his horizons, to try new things and to appreciate the beauty and fierceness of nature。 Those he meets learn to appreciate his kindness, bravery, compassion and generosity。This is a beautiful book that wraps values and virtues in a winter wonderland of adventure。 In the end Moomintroll's loving family wakes up and joins him as winter ends。 Even though her house is turned upside down, Moomintroll's mamma expresses her pride in his kindness and generosity to others during the long cold winter。 Tove Jansson, author of the Moomin series, said that she modeled the loving Moomin family after her own childhood family。Moominland Midwinter was originally published in 1957。 The paperback edition which I checked out from my local library was reissued in 2010。 There is a map of Moominland in the beginning and three pages of illustrations of the different creatures who inhabit Moominland。 In the back of the book there is a brief biography and timeline of Tove Jansson's life。I can't wait to read more in this series! It is the perfect book to draw children and adults alike into a kind, cozy and comforting fantasy world。 。。。more

The Moomins hibernate through the coldest part of the year, but one year Moomintroll awakes from his slumbers in the depths of winter and is unable to either resume his hibernation or awaken the rest of his family。 Initially alone, he is obliged to make friends with the strange creatures who seem to only manifest in the winter and so have never been encountered by the Moomins。 This is one of the more existential of the Moomin books, with much of the narrative driven by Moomintroll's feelings of The Moomins hibernate through the coldest part of the year, but one year Moomintroll awakes from his slumbers in the depths of winter and is unable to either resume his hibernation or awaken the rest of his family。 Initially alone, he is obliged to make friends with the strange creatures who seem to only manifest in the winter and so have never been encountered by the Moomins。 This is one of the more existential of the Moomin books, with much of the narrative driven by Moomintroll's feelings of isolation and loneliness。 And this is a nordic winter of extreme cold and darkness, with the sun never rising above the horizon when the winter is at its worst。 There are some genuinely chilling moments, like when the Lady of the Cold (a kind of anthropomorphism of the terrible drop in temperature experienced as the Finnish winter bites) strokes a squirrel and freezes it to death, but most of the book is taken up with Moomintroll moping around while Little My gets up to various scrapes。 But then Moominvalley is invaded by desperate people from further north, whose homes have been devastated by the Lady of the Cold, leaving them on the brink of starvation。 The chapter with the refugees has some odd tonal shifts。 Aside from the refugees and their desperate situation, Moominvalley is also invaded by a Hemulen, a member of that strange race who exist in the Moomin books as annoying busybodies (someone once claimed they are presented as Finns see people from Sweden but I would not know about that)。 The Hemulen goes around annoying everyone (or almost everyone) but they are all too polite to tell him to shag off, with the dilemma this poses being almost as big a deal as keeping the northerners fed。 In the end of course spring arrives, the northerners go home and the other Moomins wake up。 And a squirrel appears who may or may not have been the one the Lady of the Cold froze to death。 But I was left with a mystery of my own。 Is Moomintroll experiencing a typical winter, or is this an usually severe? Put another way, do the northerners come every year and eat up all the Moomins' stored food while the other winter people still their stuff to burn in a midsummer bonfire, or has all this only happened because Moomintroll was awake and able to see it, like observer who makes electrons behave differently by watching them? 。。。more

A childhood favourite that I found just as sweet and poignant as when I first read it。 This is my favourite of the Moomin books due to it's more melancholic tone and Jansson's lovely descriptions of the Winter landscape。 A childhood favourite that I found just as sweet and poignant as when I first read it。 This is my favourite of the Moomin books due to it's more melancholic tone and Jansson's lovely descriptions of the Winter landscape。 。。。more

Written in 1957, this the 5th out of 8 novels about the Moomin family。 I had not read any of the others and it felt fine to read this as a standalone novel。 Moomins are kind philosophical creatures with velvet fur and smooth round snouts。 Moomins usually sleep through winter, except this year when Moomintroll wakes up。 He discovers his green world has changed as the land is now blanketed with snow。 There he makes new friends and begins to explore this strange new world。Sort of Books have done a Written in 1957, this the 5th out of 8 novels about the Moomin family。 I had not read any of the others and it felt fine to read this as a standalone novel。 Moomins are kind philosophical creatures with velvet fur and smooth round snouts。 Moomins usually sleep through winter, except this year when Moomintroll wakes up。 He discovers his green world has changed as the land is now blanketed with snow。 There he makes new friends and begins to explore this strange new world。Sort of Books have done a terrific job of reproducing these books。 This is a beautiful hardback retailing normally for £7。99 at the time of writing。 But these are perfect gifts for children who can build them up into a library。 I realise I sound a bit like a TV infomercial here, but these books are so beautiful。 The illustrations are the original ones drawn by Tove Jansson and really bring the story to life。 The book is unusual, and by that I mean it feels very different to a British Children's story。 It is definitely more philosophical and does not shy away from difficult subjects such as death。 I loved the use of nature and imagery in the book。 They are really quite beautiful here as Moomintroll wakes up to an unknown world, never having seen snow before。 I particularly loved the imagery of the Lady of the Cold who brings the iciest and most dangerous of all temperatures。 She is immensely beautiful, in a long flowing gown but if you were to look upon her, would immediately die。 There are lessons to be learned。 Moomintroll shares his house (and all the jam) with creatures fleeing the cold and there are further lessons about being brave。 It's all slightly other-wordly。In a nutshell, it feels strange yet magical at the same time。 Children's imaginations will truly grow with this book and this is a beautiful edition of a children's classic。 。。。more

A lovely book about Moomintroll's adventures in midwinter, when the rest of his family are asleep。 The eccentricity of the ideas and writing are supplemented by beautiful descriptions and a variety of vocabulary which is just missing from many of today's novels for children。 I read this with a Year 4 class who were spellbound。 A lovely book about Moomintroll's adventures in midwinter, when the rest of his family are asleep。 The eccentricity of the ideas and writing are supplemented by beautiful descriptions and a variety of vocabulary which is just missing from many of today's novels for children。 I read this with a Year 4 class who were spellbound。 。。。more

I loved the whole Moomintroll series but Moominland Midwinter was the best。 Our friend Moomintroll, who is meant to sleep all winter with his family, wakes up and finds himself in a world where everything is the same but different。 Little My runs amuck with Moominmama's nice things, the Hemulin skis in to exhort everyone on the virtues of fresh air and exercise, and everyone is looking to eat up the family's stock of preserves。 But the best character is a new one who sits below the ice and drink I loved the whole Moomintroll series but Moominland Midwinter was the best。 Our friend Moomintroll, who is meant to sleep all winter with his family, wakes up and finds himself in a world where everything is the same but different。 Little My runs amuck with Moominmama's nice things, the Hemulin skis in to exhort everyone on the virtues of fresh air and exercise, and everyone is looking to eat up the family's stock of preserves。 But the best character is a new one who sits below the ice and drinks coffee while she fishes。 Too-ticky becomes Moomintroll's guide to the world that is the same but different, when those who are not as happy and well adjusted as the summer folk feel at home。 。。。more
